Decision-Making and the Brain
Description
This class will investigate many of these “irrational” patterns of decisions. We will review studies that used traditional methods (ex. surveys), physiological methods (ex. eye-tracking and skin conductivity), and brain based methods (ex. fMRI and EEG) to explain how these decisions are made. We will discuss the relative strengths and weaknesses of these methods and learn when it is appropriate and inappropriate to use them. This course is most appropriate for students interested in the emerging fields of decision neuroscience, neuromarketing, or neuroeconomics.

More info: While we don’t offer a specific “Neuromarketing” specialty in our graduate program, our PhDs can study decision neuroscience. Opportunities are particularly strong in the marketing department since Hedgcock has appointments in both the marketing department (http://tippie.uiowa.edu/people/profile/profile.html?id=353599) and neuroscience department (http://neuroscience.grad.uiowa.edu/faculty/william-hedgcock). But PhD students in other departments (neuroscience, psychology, accounting, finance…) are free to take relevant courses and do research in our labs.
